A disciple is someone who believes in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, intentionally learns from Him, and strives to live more like Him. Discipleship is a widely-used word to describe a journey of spiritual growth. This growth happens as a person comes alongside another to witness to them, pray with them, study the Bible with them, and fellowship with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus told us to go and make disciples as he knew that was how the Good News would be spread to all the nations. And discipleship is how it would be shared from one person to another through relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c<\/strong>Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’\u201d Matthew 28:18-20<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus illustrated a simple picture of what it looks like to share his love with others in everyday life. \u201cAnd the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others\u201d 2 Timothy 2:2<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peter, one of Jesus\u2019 disciples, wrote about how growing in Christ will change our character (2 Peter 1:5-8<\/a>). The best way to experience this type of growth and life change, while partnering with the Holy Spirit, is through discipleship. We\u2019re called to grow in Christ and help others do the same (1 Corinthians 11:1<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, \u2018If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples\u2019\u201d John 8:31<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n We see discipleship modeled in the Bible and even specific Scriptures explaining what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, follow Him, and become more like Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well\u201d Matthew 6:33<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDo not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God\u2019s will is\u2014his good, pleasing and perfect will\u201d Romans 12:2<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTherefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain\u201d 1 Corinthians 15:58<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many\u201d Mark 10:45<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cRemember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver\u201d 2 Corinthians 9:6-7<\/a> (NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTherefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
